Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer
Choosing a wedding photographer is probably the most important aspect of your wedding planning.
Your official photographs will be something you will treasure forever, so it's crucial you find a professional right for you.
But with so many to choose from, it can be difficult picking out the right photographer for your wedding, someone who is ideal for you both.
Here are my top tips to help you make the right decision:
Do the Groundwork
It won't do any harm to research and find as many photographers as you can. Go and visit their studios and get to know them. Go through their portfolios, consider client testimonials and ask lots of questions.
If you’re struggling to find someone, a good tip is to ask your chosen wedding venue if they can recommend anyone. Or do your research online and look through a reputable wedding photographer directory.
It’s also worth asking family, friends and co-workers if they can suggest a photographer.
Different Styles
When considering different photographers, pick a style that you both like whether that’s traditional, contemporary or reportage, otherwise known as ‘documentary’.
During initial meetings with prospective photographers, take along an armful of clippings from magazines of photography you both like and chat through your ideas. You should be able to get a good feeling about whether they’re the right style of photographer for you.
Are you sitting comfortably?
Do you ‘click’ and get on with your wedding photographer? Do you feel comfortable with them? It’s so important to feel at ease with them because they will play a very important role on your wedding day. You and your guests will want to feel as relaxed as possible when they’re snapping away, so pick someone who is friendly yet professional.
Questions, questions, questions
Ask lots of questions before you book any photographer. Find out exactly what you’re getting for your money. What kind of wedding album will you end up with? Is this included in the price? Can you have the rights to your own high resolution photographs at the end? How long will the photographer be around on your wedding day? A professional photographer will be happy to answer all of your queries, no matter how trivial.
Are they covered?
For your own added peace of mind, find out what type of kit they are using and check they have back-up equipment for emergencies! Please, please make sure that your photographer is fully covered for both public liability and indemnity.
Above all, choose a wedding photographer whose work you like; who clearly has plenty of experience and who comes highly recommended from credible sources. If you're looking for a wedding photographer, call me for an informal chat. I'll be happy to discuss my services.
